[Arlington, Va.] – The results of the recent Parent Pulse Survey, conducted from August 12-16, 2024 by Quantum on behalf of Parents for School Options, provides a comprehensive snapshot of parents’ experiences and perspectives on virtual education. With 2,621 parents of children enrolled in virtual schools participating, the survey sheds light on why virtual schooling is increasingly seen as a valuable educational alternative for families across the country.

Key Findings:

1. Motivations for Choosing Virtual Schooling
Safety concerns emerged as a significant motivation for why families choose virtual schooling, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5, with 87% of parents giving bullying concerns a 4 or 5 rating (70% of respondents rated it a 5). Curriculum alignment with family values also scored highly, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 (59% rated it a 5, and 20% rated it a 4). Transparency and accessibility to the curriculum were crucial, receiving a rating of 4.6 out of 5 (72% rated it 5 and 16% rated it a 4).

2. Benefits of Virtual Schooling
Parents highly value personal access to teachers, which scored an average of 4.4 out of 5 (62% rated it a 5 and 20% rated it a 4). The flexibility offered by virtual schooling, allowing students more time for extracurricular activities, was rated 4.5 out of 5 (68% rated it 5 and 18% rated it a 4). Access to specialized classes and career readiness programs, unavailable in many local traditional schools, received a rating of 4.1 out of 5 (50% rated it a 5 and 20% rated it a 4).

3. Temporary Nature of Virtual Schooling
While virtual schooling is an important and preferred option for many, some parents view it as a temporary solution. The average rating for the intention to return to traditional schools in the future was 3.0 out of 5 (27% rated this a 5, and 9% rated this a 4).

“The results of this survey affirm what many of us have observed firsthand—the virtual school environment provides not only a safer space for our children but also a tailored educational experience that aligns with our values and needs,” said Letrisha Weber, Board President of Parents for School Options. “As we continue to advocate for the expansion and support of virtual education, these insights will guide our efforts and ensure policymakers are meeting the needs of our students and families.”
