BATON ROUGE, La. – PublicSchoolOptions.org today released a new web video, “Threat." The video features parents of students at one of Louisiana’s public charter schools, Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy (LAVCA), which could be forced to close if the Louisiana teachers union and Iberville Parish School District are successful in their appeal in the case of Iberville Parish School Board, et al v. Louisiana State Elementary and Secondary Education Board, et al.Access to many public charter schools is in jeopardy due to the frivolous lawsuit, which could cause 13,000 Louisiana children to lose their schools.Last May, the District Court ruled in favor of Louisiana parents and students with a clear message that charter schools are public schools, and that the current funding mechanism established by the state could continue. In spite of the court’s ruling, the teachers union and Iberville Parish School Board have pushed forward with an appeal to the decision in their continued fight to diminish options in public education for Louisiana children. Oral arguments in the appeal are set to begin on Monday, February 29 in Baton Rouge at Southern University.The suit asks that public funding be discontinued to Type 2 charter schools in the state, which could cause those schools to close. Type 2 charter schools currently serve over 13,000 students in Louisiana. Should the union and district be successful in their appeal, many of these students would be sent back to a local public school that has already failed to meet their learning needs.
