In August, the nonprofit Oklahoma Public Charter School Association (OPCSA) filed a lawsuit against the state of Oklahoma and its state board of education for not equitably funding many of the state’s public charter schools. The OPCSA asserts the state has failed to enforce the constitution and statute, which guarantees public charter schools receive the same local and state funds as traditional public schools in its same district. All of the state’s public charter schools are supposed to be getting the same portion of state and local funds per pupil as traditional public schools, but as it turns out, many are receiving no local funds and only a portion of the state funds. The lawsuit asks that the state come into compliance with the fundamental requirement of the law that a public charter school in the same district receive its equitable share of funding as with any other traditional public school.Every child in Oklahoma deserves equal funding whether they attend a public charter school or district school. No child is worth more than another. We stand with the plaintiff’s in the case and urge the court to enforce equitable funding for all Oklahoma students.
