District Court Rules Against Unions, Allows Funding to Continue for Charter Schools
BATON ROUGE, La., May 19, 2015 – The message from Judge Fields this morning was clear: Charter schools are public schools.His ruling in Louisiana District Court said that the current funding mechanism for Type 2 charter schools could continue. These schools currently serve over 18,000 students in Louisiana.In the case, the Louisiana Association of Educators and Iberville Parish School Board filed suit against the State of Louisiana and the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education in an effort to cut off funding to Type 2 charters in the state.During the trial, the plaintiffs argued that unions and districts were harmed because they no longer received funding for the children they were not educating. Had the plaintiffs prevailed, charter schools across the state would be shut down, leaving parents without educational options for their children.“I’m so grateful that my children will be able to learn in the schools that work best for them next year. It’s a shame that teachers’ unions have made it their mission to shut down good schools. Every child in Louisiana deserves an opportunity to succeed and that means access to a quality public education,” said Christin Kaiser, a Westwego parent and Louisiana Chapter Chair of PublicSchoolOptions.org.She continued, “Thankfully, the wisdom of the court will allow my children that opportunity to succeed.”
