Governor’s decision to take away $8 million in funding from public charter schools puts parent choice at riskWASHINGTON – Last week Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced plans to strip $8 million in funding from the state’s public charter schools, a move that follows threats last year to reduce charter and online school funding.Governor Wolf’s public charter school funding cuts pit public school against public school and many school choice advocates see this proposal as another step in the Governor’s quest to take away school choice from parents and families.STATEMENT FROM TILLIE ELVRUM, PUBLICSCHOOLOPTIONS.ORG PRESIDENT AND SCHOOL CHOICE ADVOCATE:“Governor Wolf’s decision to take away critical funding from charter schools, which serve thousands of Pennsylvania’s students, is a disappointment. Every parent deserves choices when it comes to their child’s education, and as taxpayers, their charter school students should be funded at levels equal to those of traditional brick-and-mortar students. When charter schools are singled out for funding cuts, parent choice is put in jeopardy. PublicSchoolOptions.org urges the governor to reconsider his proposal and restore these devastating funding cuts."PublicSchoolOptions.org is a national alliance of parents that supports and defends parents’ rights to access the best public school options for their children. The Coalition supports the creation of public school options, including charter schools, online schools, magnet schools, open enrollment policies and other innovative education programs. Additionally, we advocate for equal access without restrictions to these public schools for all children.
