Legislature Must Act to Fix the State Charter School Law after Supreme Court Sides with Unions, Against Students and Parents
WASHINGTON – PublicSchoolOptions.org is urging the Washington State Legislature to fix the state’s current charter school law, which was found unconstitutional by the state’s highest court in a ruling that sided with teacher unions and against students and parents who benefit from school choice. By finding a funding mechanism that will keep this option available to the 1,200 students currently enrolled in the state’s charter schools, the legislature will ensure that parents continue to have a choice in selecting the schools where their children will learn best.On November 19, the Washington State Supreme Court announced it would not reconsider its September decision, despite pleas from hundreds of students and families, as well as a group of bipartisan legislators, former attorneys general, the state’s charter school association, and the state’s current attorney general.Voters approved the charter school law in 2012.STATEMENT FROM TILLIE ELVRUM, PUBLICSCHOOLOPTIONS.ORG PRESIDENT, PARENT LEADER AND SCHOOL CHOICE ADVOCATE:“This is a real opportunity for the legislature to back up the voters who approved the charter school law and the students and families who are benefiting from more school choice.
