Arlington, VA (December 20, 2021) – The National Coalition for Public School Options (PSO), a national parent advocacy organization focused on ensuring every child has access to the best quality education, today condemned a decision by Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Bailey to grant a preliminary injunction to delay important improvements to West Virginia’s charter school law.
PSO had previously filed an amicus brief against the Mountain State Justice’s request for the injunction to delay the creation of a West Virginia statewide charter school authorizer. The authorizer was recently added to the state’s charter school law.
“West Virginia lawmakers stood with parents, rightly recognizing that charter schools offer a lifeline to some children,” said PSO Board President Letrisha Weber. “The state tried to help at-risk children who desperately need access to charter schools, but it’s all been undone by an activist judge. During a Dec. 14 hearing, Judge Bailey interjected her anti-charter background into the case. We hope the Supreme Court of Appeals will quickly reverse this so that West Virginia parents and their children can have the expanded public school options they deserve. PSO will continue to stand with these West Virginia families, as well as legislators and the attorney general in this fight to ensure children have access to the public schools that best fits their needs.”
