The passage of Senate Bill 727 and House Bill 2287 is another milestone achievement for the Missouri legislature in the school choice movement.

The National Coalition for Public School Options (PSO) filed comments with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in regards to proposed amendments to the rules governing the Missouri Course Access and Virtual School Program (MOCAP).

Samoy Mainda has been advocating for educational options in Missouri since 2017. And last year she saw all her hard work and determination pay off when Governor Mike Parson signed House Bill 1552 into law, allowing her daughter Hannah to access a full-time virtual school.

For school choice advocates, the summer of 2022 has certainly delivered its share of victories. On summer solstice, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of parents in Carson v. Makin allowing Maine residents to use state-funded school vouchers toward their child’s education at a parochial school.

Today, Governor Mike Parson signed House Bill 1552 into law, which expands access to virtual education options for students as well as providing increased funding for Missouri’s charter schools. The legislation is vital to continue the expansion of school choice efforts in the state.

Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri State Senate last Wednesday (April 6) passed House Bill 1552 related to charter schools and parental choice in education. Many have applauded passage of the measure as a step forward in bringing greater options to parents and students throughout Missouri, particularly for charter schools. Others, however, believe there is more to be done.
